Chicago will always be home, and when I think of the places that define it for me, Bang Bang Pie & Biscuits is at the top of the list. Nestled in Logan Square, this cozy little pie shop isn’t just a bakery—it’s a warm hug, a bite of nostalgia, and a reminder of why food is so much more than just something we eat.

I used to live in a nearby neighborhood, and I would walk over all the time—sometimes for breakfast, sometimes for a slice of pie, sometimes just to see what special they had that day. No matter when I went, there was always a line, a testament to just how good this place is. But trust me—it’s always worth the wait.

The Pie Garden & That Iconic Blue-Checked Paper

Bang Bang isn’t just about the food—it’s about the experience. Their Pie Garden out back is a hidden gem, a quirky little oasis filled with picnic tables and random doors repurposed as art. It’s the kind of place where you can sit for hours, fork in hand, savoring every bite while soaking up the Chicago sunshine.

Inside, the magic continues. The kitchen is open, so while you wait, you can watch the team baking, rolling out dough, and crafting their famous pies. It feels like stepping into someone’s home—warm, welcoming, and filled with the scent of buttery crusts and freshly baked biscuits.

And of course, every slice of pie comes served on their recognizable blue-and-white checkered paper, a small but signature detail that makes Bang Bang, well, Bang Bang.

The Best Key Lime Pie—Ever.

I had never considered myself a key lime pie person—until Bang Bang. The moment I tried their version, it was over. I’ve been on a mission ever since to find one that even comes close, but nothing compares.

Their website describes it simply:

Key lime custard, lime zest, graham cracker crust.

But that doesn’t do it justice. The graham cracker crust is the perfect balance of buttery and crisp, the key lime custard is bright and tangy without being too sweet, and their homemade whipped cream? Absolute perfection. If I could have it shipped across the country, I would.

I even have an enamel pin of their key lime pie that lives on my denim jacket—a tiny tribute to my all-time favorite slice.

More Than Just Pie

While pie is the star, Bang Bang’s biscuits deserve just as much love. Their website calls them huge & fluffy, and that’s exactly what they are—perfectly baked, comforting, and just the thing for a cold Chicago morning.

Their Bacon Biscuit and Gravy Biscuit were staples for me in the winter, but now that I’m vegetarian, I’d absolutely go for the Farmer’s Biscuit: Roasted delicata squash, herbed chèvre, and pomegranate seeds + pickled beets on a griddled biscuit + a simple green salad

And while I haven’t tried them yet, they also offer Savory Pot Pies & Quiche, which sound absolutely amazing.

I love that they offer vegetarian options, and if you have dietary restrictions, they’ve got you covered. They make gluten-friendly and vegan pies by special order—just call ahead, and they’ll bake one just for you.

A Shop with Heart

Bang Bang isn’t just a business—it’s a community. Their staff is as warm and inviting as their pies, and I got to experience that firsthand when I reached out to Shannon, their Events and Community Outreach Coordinator, for a photo and blurb for Fern to Fork. She was genuinely excited for me, even sharing her own food recommendations for Boise and outdoor spots in Missouri—little did she know my family is in Kansas City. We had this unexpected connection, and her kindness came through in every message.

"Bang Bang Pie & Biscuits, nestled in a Logan Square cozy cafe with a welcoming patio, began in 2012. Our goal is to enrich the lives of guests with superior food, beverages, and hospitality. We hope you'll visit and enjoy our space where friends and family continue to gather."

When I told her, "We’ll absolutely be back when Chicago calls us home again—can’t wait to stop by!" she responded with, "What an amazing adventure. I hope it continues to feed you well."

That warmth isn’t just Shannon—it’s Bang Bang at its core. The entire team makes you feel like you’ve stepped into a friend’s kitchen, whether you’re chatting with the staff, watching pies being made in their open kitchen, or soaking in the atmosphere of the Pie Garden.

And that’s exactly what Bang Bang does—it feeds more than just your stomach. It feeds your soul, your nostalgia, your sense of home.

Beyond the Bakery: Shop, Events & Pi(e) Day

If you can’t make it to Chicago anytime soon, you can still bring a little Bang Bang magic home. Their branding is just as charming as their shop—they sell some of their pantry products online through Here Here Market, including their jam line, "This Is Our Jam!" (how cute is that?). I’ve had the blueberry lavender, and I can personally vouch for how delicious it is!

Bang Bang Pie & Biscuits was founded by Michael Ciapciak, whose vision was to create more than just a bakery—it was about bringing Midwestern hospitality to life. From their signature pies and biscuits to their welcoming Pie Garden, Bang Bang has become a beloved neighborhood staple, a place where people gather, connect, and share a meal made with heart.

They also cater events and host private gatherings in their Pie Garden, making it the perfect spot for a bridal shower, birthday, or just a good old-fashioned celebration. And every year, they go all out for Pi(e) Day (3.14) with special flavors and orders—including the Frankenpie, a surprise sampling of six different pie slices in one tin.

A Must-Visit in Chicago

Bang Bang Pie & Biscuits is more than just a bakery—it’s a little slice of Chicago magic. The people are warm, the food is made with love, and whether you’re cozying up inside on a winter day or enjoying a sunny afternoon in the Pie Garden, you’ll feel at home here.
